Chile, like other countries of South America, celebrating the bicentenary of independence from Spain in a regional framework in recent years has seen many countries consolidation in democracy and in the awareness of identity whose deepest roots are removed in the history that preceded the centuries of oppression and exploitation of the English domination.


The native of Chile, the Mapuche, from the beginning of the coup of 11 September 1973 were victims of repression. The Allende government with land reform, had returned them about 700,000 hectares of land. Other Mapuche before the coup had participated in the occupation of approximately 75,000 hectares of land owned by landlords. In September 1972 the Allende government passed a law (Ley No. 17729) which guaranteed the fundamental rights of the Mapuche in the constitution: the return of the property rights of the lost land, the expansion of territorial rights, support for social and cultural interests, the improvement of health care and education in the language Mapudungun mother. more>>
